Meet the Author

Maddie Short
Maddie is a Annapolitan photographer obsessed with monograms, Lilly Pulitzer, and happy hour.

NYC TuesdaysTogether is lead by Megan Pena-Ariet & Erin Braun and it serves NYC-based creatives of all varieties. We meet in fun places all over New York City, primarily in Manhattan and Brooklyn. We love talking casually about all topics facing entrepreneurs and creatives following dreams, and also invite members to be “Guest Speakers” on topics related to the RTS Theme of each month. We have LOTS of fun, too!

What does #communityovercompetition mean to you?
To NYC Tuesdays Together, it means helping one another reach our dreams, no matter how big they may be. We are such a diverse and unique group with so many talents, but have found time and time again that by combining our expertise in many fields, we can help the whole group rise! It’s truly inspiring to see the talent and amazing hearts in our group at each monthly meet-up. So many friendships and collaborations have been formed and our little network continues to grow in the spirit of helping our members lift one another up.
What has been one of your favorite TuesdaysTogether moments?
My favorite moments have included our art supply drive at the holidays. As a group, we collected enough art supplies to donate to 30 at-risk youth at a charter school in Brooklyn, NY. Dropping off the art kits and seeing the faces of the adults in the building is something I will never forget. We amazed people even as early as 6 months in!!

Another favorite moment was our most recent meeting. A new member offered to host the HUGE Manhattan + Brooklyn group at her rooftop in Long Island City. We had an amazing view of the city and a great group of people, old and new. It always inspires us to see old friends and colleagues at each meeting, but to also open up our arms to new members!

Ok one more…we have a group member in Brooklyn who has been SO KIND and has opened her home to us MANY times! We love her so much. We have had yoga night, heartfelt conversations about self-care and mental health, pot luck dinners and countless laughs at “Yari’s place”. It feels like home and we are so thankful.

What has been your favorite monthly topic for your TuesdaysTogether gatherings? Why?
Our favorite topic —- well, we don’t always stay on topic too well, so we always make it into a funny conversation! We loved the mental health conversation because it was very honest, raw and real. It seems difficult to speak to a group of new people about the difficulties of running a small business that you pour your heart and soul into, but it was just perfect. Another topic that we loved was social media, because we all became one another’s “friends” on social media, which is a great way to stay in touch between meetings!
Where does your chapter typical meet up?
We move from spot to spot because of the craziness that is NYC. Sometimes we are in Williamsburg, other times parts of Brooklyn, sometimes in people’s homes and other times at restaurants or public spaces! We even had a meeting at the Knot Headquarters in Manhattan and at Industry City, a cool new indoor creative space in Brooklyn!!
What is something that you do as a chapter that works well for you, and that you think would be helpful for other chapters?
We always play a silly ice breaker, even if it seems ridiculous because it helps people feel more relaxed and less like they have to “network”.
Also, we usually bring food and drinks to have it be a pot-luck. It makes the event relatively low-key and relaxed. Not having to pay or be too stressed is such a gift on a weeknight, especially for many of our members who work other full-time jobs during the day. So yes, food + silly jokes = success!

I would LOVE to be a part of this chapter. I’ve just moved to NYC and I’d like to try to talk emu photography further. How would I get in touch with the wonderful people in this group?
