Chances are you are constantly logged into Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest… the list goes on. I’d take a bet that while you’re reading this post, a notification is trying to pull your attention in a new direction! (Resist, dear friends, I promise it’ll be worth it!) While there are so many awesome social networking sites, these sites can be more than just catching up with old friends; they can be the best marketing resource you have in your business! So let’s talk about the good stuff: how to leverage your social media to reach the right clients for your business and focus on profitability (over popularity!)
I’ve been paid thousands of dollars to travel the country and talk about Instagram, hilarious right? I mean, why do I get to sit in front of people and talk about a silly app of square photos on our phones? I even got to talk about how I use social media to create a legacy during the Rising Tide Society Summit! Why? Because when you un-tap the power of these apps and learn how to leverage them to reach your ideal clients, it can entirely transform your life and your business.
Let me break it down for you, a little over two years ago I had less than 2,000 followers on Instagram, today I am on the cusp on 60k…. that’s five times the population of the little Wisconsin town I am living in, crazy right? But here’s why this matters, it isn’t about popularity, it’s about growing the RIGHT audience, and I’ve managed to do just that.
So let me tell you a few tips on how to leverage your social media in a way that will help you actually reach those clients you are trying to reach (you know, instead of screaming into the internet void and hoping they hear you!)
Don’t be a one hit wonder: It’s easy to think that your social media should be flooded with your work (and only your work!) Share things about your life, share about your pets, or your kids, or your lunch (especially if it’s mac and cheese!) While it sounds silly, your ideal clients need to connect with you as the artist before they can connect and appreciate your art! You are more than your work, so choose things you are comfortable sharing and keep it up to your brand quality!
Choose your images carefully: Social media puts this pressure on us making us feel like we HAVE to post something or it didn’t happen. While it can be tempting, save some memories just for yourself and choose the images you share very carefully. Your feeds are a curated look at your life and business and should be a reflection of not only your work but your life. Make sure every post is a reflection of your brand and is up to par in terms of the quality your clients can expect from you!
Build a community: Now, don’t log off of this post and give the heart eye emojis to ten people and think that you are building a community. Reach out, leave heartfelt comments, connect with people OUTSIDE of the apps and send some encouragement. Some of my best friends have come from Instagram but the true friendship and engagement happened when we finally connected outside of the app, so shoot them an email, find them on Facebook, or leave them a comment that you’d love to be in touch!
Use your captions: Do you ever have the perfect photo to post but absolutely no words coming to mind? Yeah, me too. Here’s what I think: tell the story, tell me why this photo matters, explain the context of it, or why I should care about the moment you are sharing. It’s so easy to get caught up in the “whimsy” adjectives to write our captions but the true connection comes when you not only invite your followers to “like” your post, you invite them into that moment – that is when people truly connect with your work, with your life, with your story. Now, you don’t have to be all long winded (like me) but don’t let those captions go to waste, think them out and tell me why I should care (and not just keep scrolling!)
Profitability trumps popularity: Wait, you just want to grow your following? Wrong. You want to build the RIGHT following! I would rather have 100 engaged, excited, invested followers than 1,000 people who didn’t give a hoot about what I did. It’s important to let people in, help them feel like they know you, and allow them to connect with you beyond your work, because an engaged following will drive profits and aren’t you in this to get paid to do what you love? Use social media as a means of an invitation, so instead of selling, selling, selling on your feeds, invite people to join your journey and connect with you outside of a phone app!
There you have it, my top five tips for leveraging social media to reach the right clients and use social media to propel your business! Don’t be afraid to post content you love, share your goals, reach out to old connections, and make friendships beyond the apps! This is the best free marketing you’ll get, so use it wisely, use it well, and remember to speak to those ideal clients and stop shouting into the void! You’ve got this!
